How Your Chats with Meta’s AI Will Change What You See Online

Meta (the company that owns Facebook and Instagram) is changing how it chooses the posts and ads you see. This is being done to make your feeds feel more personal and relevant using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The Big Change: Your AI Chats Become a Clue

For a long time, what you see on Facebook and Instagram has been based on your actions: which posts you like, which videos you watch, and which pages you follow.

Now, Meta will use one more important thing to figure out your interests: your conversations with their AI assistants (like Meta AI). Your chats will become a new signal to help their system understand what you care about.

What This Looks Like (With an Example)

The goal is that if you talk about a topic with the AI, you should start seeing posts about that topic on Facebook and Instagram, just like if you had liked a page about it.

Here is a simple example:

  1. You use Meta AI and ask it a question like: “Tell me about the best hiking trails in my state.”
  2. Meta’s system learns from this conversation that you are currently interested in hiking.
  3. The next time you open your Facebook or Instagram feed, you may start seeing:
    • Content: Recommended posts about hiking tips or beautiful new trails.
    • Groups: Suggestions to join local hiking or outdoor activity groups.
    • Ads: Advertisements for new running shoes, hiking boots, or camping gear.

This change is planned to start on December 16, 2025.

You Still Have Control

Meta says you are still in control of your experience. You can always use tools like Ads Preferences and other settings to adjust the kind of content and ads you see, even after this change goes into effect.

Important Note on Privacy:

Meta has stated that if you discuss sensitive topics with the AI—such as your political views, health, or religious beliefs—that information will not be used to show you personalized ads. They only use it to give you better recommendations for general content.
