Creating high-quality Instagram Reels starts long before you hit “Export.” To ensure your content isn’t blurry, stretched, or poorly cropped, you must configure your Sequence Settings correctly within Adobe Premiere Pro.
Whether you are working with vertical smartphone footage or converting horizontal cinematic clips, here is the technical blueprint for a perfect 9:16 edit.
1. The Automatic Setup (For Vertical Source Footage)
If you filmed your content vertically (9:16) on a smartphone or a mirrorless camera, Premiere Pro can do the heavy lifting for you.
- The Shortcut: Simply click your clip in the Project Panel and drag it onto the empty Timeline.
- The Result: Premiere automatically generates a sequence that matches the clip’s vertical orientation, frame rate, and resolution.
- The “iPhone Fix”: If you are using HDR footage from an iPhone and it appears “blown out” or overly bright, go to Sequence > Sequence Settings and check the box for Auto Tone Map Media. This instantly normalizes the colors for a standard Rec.709 workspace.
2. Manual Configuration (The Professional Custom Standard)
If you are starting from scratch or converting horizontal (16:9) video into a vertical format, you should manually define your sequence to meet Instagram’s technical requirements.
Navigate to File > New > Sequence, go to the Settings tab, and enter the following parameters:
| Setting | Professional Requirement |
| Editing Mode | Custom |
| Frame Rate | 29.97 fps (or 30 fps) |
| Frame Size (Horizontal) | 1080 |
| Frame Size (Vertical) | 1920 |
| Pixel Aspect Ratio | Square Pixels (1.0) |
| Fields | No Fields (Progressive Scan) |
Important: When dragging a horizontal clip into this sequence, Premiere will ask if you want to change the sequence to match the clip. Always select “Keep Existing Settings” to maintain your vertical 1080×1920 workspace.
3. Mastering the Vertical Workspace
To see your edit clearly, switch your Premiere Pro layout. Go to the Workspaces icon at the top right and select Vertical. This maximizes the height of your Program Monitor, allowing you to see exactly how the video will appear on a mobile device.
4. Advanced Tool: Auto Reframe
When placing horizontal footage into a vertical sequence, your subject may be “cut off” on the sides. Instead of manually animating the Position keyframes, use the Auto Reframe effect:
- Open the Effects panel (
Window > Effects). - Search for Auto Reframe.
- Drag and drop it onto your horizontal clip in the timeline.
- How it works: Premiere uses AI to analyze the motion in your shot and automatically pans the “camera” to keep the most important subject centered in the 9:16 frame.
Summary Checklist
Before you begin your edit, double-check that your sequence reads 1080 x 1920 with a 1.0 Square Pixel ratio. Using these settings ensures that your Reels are optimized for the Instagram algorithm and provide the best possible viewing experience for your followers.
